President’s Letter January 2017

Looking Forward

As I write this we have just finished the Year End Awards Banquet honoring the NEDA year-end-award winners for 2016. It was a wonderful event brought back to life by a group of volunteers who wanted to re-energize the occasion to honor our year-end-award winners. The banquet was held at the beautiful Indian Ridge Country Club in Andover, MA. It was a lovely venue.

Thank you to the committee comprised of Stanley Edwards, Cara Kettenbach, Kathy Hickerson, and Kerstin Witaszek for their work on the Year End Awards Banquet.

The excellent dinner was followed by Kathy McHugh, our outgoing President, summarizing the year’s events for our annual meeting. Alexandra Dane shared the results of the election and announced the new board members. The new board was elected by our membership. We welcome new board members Jennifer Antonnen as Nominations Coordinator and Susan Patterson as Year End Awards Manager.

We owe a debt of gratitude to our outgoing board members. Kathy McHugh served two terms, six years as our NEDA President. She was honored at the banquet with the introduction of the Katherine McHugh Perpetual Trophy, to be awarded to the NEDA high score Adult Amateur rider at Prix St. George level as part of the year-end awards. The first recipient, Tyrelle Keslin, was at the banquet to accept the award. (could put the photo here?)

Suzanne Leblanc finished her term of office as Ombudsman and will continue to volunteer in the area of Education. Elizabeth Preston has completed her term as Technology Coordinator and will also continue to volunteer on the Education Committee. Thank you all for your dedicated service to our membership on the NEDA Board of Directors.

The year ahead promises to be an exciting one. We are eagerly anticipating announcing to the membership a major headliner for our Fall Symposium. We will make the announcement in the February issue.

We are continuing to offer multiple recognized shows and a schooling show. The NEDA Spring Schooling Show at Strongwater Farm in Tewksbury, MA is a great opportunity to try riding your tests in a low-key, supportive environment in preparation for the show season.

The NEDA Spring Show this year will become a Level 2 Competition split into two one day competitions allowing greater opportunity to earn scores for Regional Championships. We expect the Summer Show to be held again at the same location in Georgetown and the new owners of the farm are eager to show the improvements they are making to the venue. We will cap off the competition year with the Fall Festival which grows larger and more exciting every year thanks to the efforts of a huge contingent of volunteers!

We continue to rely almost solely on volunteers to produce the events for our organization of over 1400 members. If you would like to get more involved please let us know. We will happily put your time and talents to good use! There are opportunities ranging from one day to as much time as you are willing to offer. You may contact our Volunteer Facilitator at

We appreciate your support of the dressage community and always welcome your input. Thank you for your membership and support of dressage in New England!
