No hint of Spring

NEDA President’s Letter ~ February 2020

It’s February, a month that promises nothing.  The only holiday is President’s Day.  There is no hint of spring.  And, the only break to the bleak weather (at least in New England) comes from a couple of groundhogs waving across the US/Canadian border to show who stands taller.  I know – there is Valentine’s Day – but not everyone appreciates Cupid’s poor aim.

As I write this letter, it is dark and rainy outside.  Something between a spring thaw and a winter ice palace exists around my horses’ paddock, barn and arena.  Yet I realize that a large percentage of our NEDA members are not enjoying this grey version of New England winter.  These months our geographic footprint extends to the southern states, particularly Florida.  The folks who make the trek to warmer climates enjoy hacking to the show grounds, sweating in their outdoor arenas, and occasionally need a sweater for the cooler evenings.  I realize this is a gross simplification, and not intended to minimize the ways in which we all deal with Mother Nature’s pranks while we continue our pursuit of the perfect circle, but I do want to acknowledge that NEDA members are mobile.  So, how are you spending the winter months?  Send me a note, a picture, a favorite moment ( – let’s brighten up March by following the winter exploits of NEDA Members.  I am serious – send them and I’ll create a collage for the March President’s letter.

In the meantime, the NEDA Board has been active in improving our services for the aspiring rider.  As promised in January, you received our request for input.  I will report on the results as soon as they are tabulated.  Four changes were approved by the NEDA Board:

1.     The NEDA Schooling Shows Coordinator is a new Board Functional Manager within the Competitions group and will report to the Competitions Coordinator.  The Schooling Shows Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing, supporting and growing the schooling show programs run by NEDA members as well as the NEDA Board.  I am very pleased to announce that Peter Chavonelle has been nominated and approved by the Board into this position.

2.     The NEDA Awards Coordinator is a new Board Functional Manager within the Membership group and will report to the Membership Coordinator.  The NEDA Awards Coordinator will be responsible for the timely and accurate allocation of awards appropriate for competitions, volunteers and USDF GMO award categories.  The Awards Coordinator will work closely with the Year End Awards Coordinator (YEAC) to ensure that the appropriate awards are presented at the Year End Awards Banquet.  This position is currently open so if you are interested, please contact Jennifer Englund (

3.     A new off-Board position of Junior/Young Rider Liaison has been created.  The JR/YR Liaison is responsible for creating the Youth News section in NEDA’s newsletter, the TIP.  I am very pleased to announce that Sophia Chavonelle was nominated and approved by the Board into this position.

4.     Amy Bresky has taken the position of Scholarship Manager, now an off-Board position.  Amy will work with the Scholarship Committee to receive, review and decide on scholarship applications.

We thank all of our volunteers, in particular Peter, Sophia and Amy for taking on new roles.  NEDA runs on dedicated volunteers – on and off the Board.  Thank you!

Cheers wherever you are,

PS. A correction to my January list of USDF updates: USDF is NOT fully responsible for licensing of dressage officials. USDF has taken over the responsibility of training dressage officials and has no voice in the actual granting of licenses, a responsibility fully retained by USEF. Thanks to Sally Davenport for this correction.
