NEDA President’s Letter ~ March/April 2020

There is a famous saying, “may you live in interesting times”.  We certainly are!  Whether you consider politics, the environment, global health, or our social fabric, interesting doesn’t quite do it justice.  Complex is more like it.  We tend to think of our world of dressage as very local, personal, immediate, and immune from the complexity of globalization – not so.  Here is the thing about complexity – it is defined by multiplicity (more things going on at one time), interdependence (these things are connected and influence each other), ambiguity (we know less and less about them), and flux (the things keep changing).  How will this influence us?  Horses transported from overseas, show officials travelling from other countries, our US teams and crew heading to Japan, people driving across our country instead of flying.  These are the obvious, but we also need to think about the less obvious.  USDF and many GMOs are drafting emergency plans for environmental crises like floods and fires.  We should include emergency plans for things like quarantines, travel bans, onsite illness, and many more events we couldn’t imagine just a few months ago.

As I write I am again aware that by the time you read it, much more will have happened and changed.  I wish you all safe, healthy, crisis-free days ahead.

Cheers

Iris
